First Major Study on the Immigration Background of Top U.S. Math and Science High School Students to be Released in Washington D.C. on Monday, July 19.
NFAP Finds ‘Extraordinary Proportion’ of Top Students Have Immigrant Roots
Arlington, VA – On Monday, July 19, the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) will release the first study of its kind examining the immigration backgrounds of finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, top scorers of the 2004 U.S. Math Olympiad, and members of the U.S. Physics Team, the United States’ most prestigious awards for young scientists and mathematicians. NFAP, a non-partisan public policy research group based in Arlington, VA, produced its findings after conducting more than 50 interviews with America’s top high school students and examining the immigration background of their parents. The study included international students, skilled professionals, family-based immigrants, and refugees. It will be published in the upcoming issue of International Educator.
Two of America’s top science students (from VA and MD) will join Stuart Anderson, executive director of NFAP, at the news conference.

About Stuart Anderson
Stuart Anderson, Executive Director of NFAP, served as Executive Associate Commissioner for Policy and Counselor to the Commissioner at the Immigration and Naturalization Service from August 2001 to January 2003. He spent four and a half years on Capitol Hill on the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, for Senator Spencer Abraham and Senator Sam Brownback, and has published articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere.
About Melis Nuray Anahtar
Melis Nuray Anahtar was a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search for her research into white blood cells. As part of her research Melis designed and built her own microchips. A resident of Bethesda, MD, her parents were born in Turkey. She will attend MIT in the fall.
About Divya Nettimi
Divya Nettimi, born in India, will attend Stanford in the fall and plans to become a research scientist. A resident of Oakton, VA, she was a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search for developing calculations that may enhance the understanding of muscle activity and myosin. At her high school, she helped start the Assisitive Technology Club that produces reading devices to help children with motor disabilities communicate.
